Though WUMP Collective has been shining a light on some of the dopest acts in underground bass music for nearly two years now, their new bi-weekly WUMP Radio podcast is primed to really show ravers exactly WHY they should he excited about the stuff being released by their diverse catalog of artists and allies. The podcast’s second episode, hosted by illanthropy, sets the bar for future episodes incredibly high with a series of wonky, hard-hitting tunes that constantly surprise the listener with their unpredictable nature.
The mix draws the listener in right away with percussive sounds that lead into cosmic pads and lush strings, before switching up into an incredibly unexpected yet heavy drop that sets the tone for the rest of the mix. From there the mix glides through a tracklist of almost exclusively illanthropy tunes, showing off the producer’s versatile yet distinct style. Much like Bassnectar before him, illanthropy couples captivating melodies with grime filled basses, often completed by a sprinkling of tasteful and tripped out vocal samples. Perhaps the best thing about illanthropy’s music is all the little intricacies. Everything from the small percussive noises to the weird sound effects and field recordings keep the mix interesting from start to finish.
The producer ends things in an even weirder way than he began, with a politically charged and psychedelic ambient tune that depicts many of the things wrong with our government today. The ominous vocals plead the listener to face the truth about how our country will be in the coming years, perfectly capturing much of the fear many people are experiencing. It will be interesting to watch the rise of this talented and experimental artist in coming years, we hope he continues to be a source for inspiration and relief.
