Two heads are better than one, actually, in the case they really are. Consisting of long-time friends and veteran DJs Carlos Maldonado and Francisco Costoya, the duo Too Heavy Crew is a tech/house music duo based out of Orlando, FL.
Although they each established reputations as top-flight producers and DJs, these longtime friends started to truly hit their stride when they combined their talents. Over the last half-decade, they’ve had notable releases on House Keepers Records, Rawsome Recordings, and Furious Funk Records.
We caught up with Too Heavy Crew post their electric performance at the Rynobus EDCO 2021 to talk about how they went from one to TOO, some of their favorite venues to play at, and what’s in store for them next.
Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to chat with me! Let’s jump right in.
RR: Carlos, I remember you opening up for Alex Wood and Krybtonite at Ignition back in the day at Firestone… you were so hungry back then, constantly willing to grow and do more… Do you feel like that scene helped transition you to who you are as an artist today?
THC: Absolutely, because if it wasn’t for that scene I would never have met the people who inspired me to become who I am today.
RR: Frankie, as UCF Knight, did you go to school always with music in the back of your mind, what was your original degree in?
THC: While I was a student at UCF, I was constantly going to shows and listening to DJs. In school, I studied marketing, and always worked on music on the side.
RR: How did the Too Heavy Crew come to be? You started off as friends but what really tied the two strings together?
THC: We were roommates and for fun would work on music together. We often played already b2b sometimes, and we just decided to create something original. What really kicked it off for us officially was our first EP Mars on House Keepers.
RR: As Orlando natives, you two left a pretty significant imprint in the Orlando music scene. Do you see yourselves ever leaving home bass?
THC: Orlando is our city and our home for a reason. We don’t plan on leaving anytime soon. The music scene here is thriving and healthy.
RR: You’ve performed at Imagine Music Festival, Okeechobee Music Festival, Asteria, and EDC Orlando. All very different festivals with very different vibes. Would you say you have a favorite?
THC: It’s hard to choose a favorite, every festival has its own vibe and experience. Okeechobee with our b2b set with MASF was especially exciting.
RR: This was your second year playing EDC Orlando. The first year I’m sure was exhilarating, how would you describe the energy this time around? Did you feel the post covid EDC energy in the air?
THC: EDC Orlando is always special for us. It’s our hometown festival, and we’ve both been going since the early days of the festival. The energy this time was on fire. People are definitely glad to be back raving. And we are happy to be back on stage!
RR: Your latest submission GIMMIE released on 11.19.21 on House Keepers “Don’t Forget to Go Home”, tell me about it this one, any inspiration?
THC: We’ve been listening to a lot of groovy stripped-back tech house and some of that influence made its way into this track!
RR: You’ve had your string of impressive projects from your first EP MARS to the classic Satisfy, what are you working on next?
THC: We have a remix coming out soon, and also another track on our friend’s nite records label. Not too much information we can give out YET but very soon!
RR: You’ve played at some pretty sick venues, from Elixir to The Vanguard, Guilt, and so many more… Is there a venue that really feels the most like home?
THC: The Vanguard definitely has a full circle feel, since we both started DJing there years ago. We also love elixir as the regular spot. It’s an intimate vibe and everyone there is a friend.
RR: You both grew up with that Latin flavor! What’s that one food from your country you can’t live without… you know, that abuelita good good.
THC: Frankie: I love bistec empanizado and croquettes, lots of croquettes. Carlos: Puerto Rican pasteles and mofongo.
