We are a generation defined by 90’s alternative and grunge rock. No matter the background or where your personal developmental musical journey may currently be, it seems as though our generation can all connect on a common ground of nostalgia in regards to these allusions of our youth.
Nirvana, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, NIN, and Stone Temple Pilots are off-hand, the first groups I would immediately associate with what many may dock as “the greatest decade of music in history.” Perceptive discussion aside, it was undoubtedly an era that will continue to linger and spark heartfelt, lung blaring moments of sing alongs with friends for years to come.
As I put together this collection, I came to the realization that there are very few proper edm remix dedications to the genre. Is this because many are reluctant to toy with an era of music that is so widely respected and loved – an era with a massive cult following of conscious (and subconscious) die-hards? As Derek Vincent Smith (Pretty Lights) said in Re: Generation:
“Today the technology allows you to go back and reinvent the music in a completely new and original way. I realize that despite the technology, despite the genres, despite the era, artists and musicians are striving for the same thing which is to evolve music and push the envelope and create something new….the integrity of good music will never die.”
1.) Smashing Pumpkins – Disarm [Robotic Pirate Monkey Remix] | Direct Download
Original release: March 1994
As I discovered this track, my respect for Robotic Pirate Monkey as producers skyrocketed. This ‘Disarm’ remix is a dubbed out reflection of the how the phases of music which I’ve enjoyed throughout the years can be brilliantly fused together to suffice my ears deepest desires.
2.) Oasis – Wonderwall [Figure Remix] | Direct Download
Original release: October 1995
This remix from Figure was on replay for weeks when I first discovered it. A perfect tribute with a kickdrum that creates an immediate presence. Pulsating bass lines and rhythmic drumstep will methodically transition you between singing along verse for verse and getting gritty to the womp like you never would’ve imagined.
3.) Blind Melon – No Rain [Pumpkin Remix] | Direct Download
Original release: September 1992
Pumpkin deems this “bouncy lovehop”… I feel that. A very different interpretation than typical remixes, he keeps the beat minimal and focuses on the original and it’s mellow roots, a perfect combination. The general pace of the track remains, however Pumpkin manages to foster more of a trippy, journey sound.

4.) Nine Inch Nails v. Radiohead v. Nirvana – Pretty Lights Mashup | Direct Download
Pretty Lights pays homage to three of the most renowned bands of the entire era, with a soulful electro mashup blending Radiohead’s “Everything in its Right Place”, Nirvana’s “All Apologies”, and Nine Inch Nail’s “Closer” together. Derek took a much more creative and original approach with his sound, unlike your average mashup. The track wreaks of his electro soul style and the heady groove elements he is known for best.
