Balkan Bump has just released his debut EP, Balkan Bump, a four track synopsis that gives us a preview of what the talented ethnomusicologist has in store for his new project. We first caught wind of the producer, also known as Will Magid, when his track “Aymo” feat. Talib Kweli got remixed by the funk, hip-hop fusion artist Gramatik last November. He quickly followed up after that fire remix with “Irfan”, a track completely out of left field, yet it fit together so well. Magid’s music is currently classified as “Future Balkan”, an interesting new found genre that we kept finding ourselves looking back to. Since these two drops, we have been highly anticipating what else he would come up with.
Balkan Bump starts off with “Irfan”, with an excellent mix of a lively horn and percussion section. You can check out our more in-depth look here. Next up is “Judaeo Slang”, which is probably going to be everyone’s favorite. It encompasses a deep, trap beat with fluctuating flutes, plucking strings, and a teasing trumpet played by Magid himself. He then gives us the original “Aymo” and it takes on a more relaxed vibe, really letting listeners catch every detail he layered together. We finish off with “Wonderland”, starting with a playful duet with the piano and trumpet. Magid then throws it in with the bass, organ chords, and bright snaps of percussive notes.
We have fallen in love with Balken Bump all over again with this unique fusion of electronic music and instrumental interpretations from around the world. Balkan Bump is available on Soundcloud and Spotify now. You can also check him out on Gramatik’s Re:CoiL tour, details of which can be seen here.
