With the release of his appropriately-titled Outdated EP on Funkadelphia Recordings, New Jersey producer Ludge is looking back to the roots of dubstep as he pushes it towards the future.
Outdated reprises the vibe of legends like Benga, Coki, Caspa and Rusko with four dark, wobbly tunes which sound as if they could have come from a UK garage 12 years ago. Instead of splashing in your face, Ludge’s deep bass stays melodic in the pocket, encouraging a continuous, neck-breaking groove. The title track featuring No Beans brings back the familiar “step” found in Benga & Coki’s classic “Night”. The heavy sub-bass in “Dubadelphia” reminds us of Rusko’s banger “Cockney Thug”. For Ludge, melody is just as important as modulating, something that many dubstep producers have forgotten.
As the boundaries of the dubstep genre continue expanding, Ludge’s well-done, original dubstep is a treasure. If you dig Outdated, check out Ludge’s Soundcloud for more old-school fire.
