Morten Breum may be unknown to many in the United States now, but his arrival is inevitable. One of the leading producer / dj’s out of Denmark, Breum’s style includes masterful blending of electronic and progressive house genres. He first gained national recognition after the release of his debut album “Drop” and is currently hard at work on new tracks that will be debuted at Winter Music Conference.
Breum just released his Larva (Far Away) Remixes EP that is available for purchase on Itunes.
Hi Morten thanks for taking the time to interview with us. You’ve played everywhere throughout Europe and are now taking over the US. What are some of the major differences between the scenes?
The house scene has been in Europe for many years, but it’s a lot of energy and fresh here. People are very curious about what it is. It has kind of the same vibe as Europe 5 – 10 years ago, but not in a bad way.
What are some of your favorite tracks to drop in your sets right now?
My set kind of depends on where I play. In Italy right now, trap is very hot.
Whatever kind of trap tunes I drop, it’s sick.
I like the Otto Knows remix of Burns ‘Lies’ and Danny Avila’s ‘Breaking Your Fall‘. Right now it feels like everyone is just waiting to release that huge track in Miami for Winter Music Conference and Ultra.
How would you describe what it’s like to play in New York City?
It’s like New York has really gotten into the big house arena with Swedish House Mafia at Madison Square Garden and EDC New York. New Year’s last year I played at Pier 94 with Avicii and it’s huge crowds with thousands of people. I like that about here.
What got you into dj’ing and when did you decide to make it a full time job?
When I was 12 years old there was this youth school where I lived so that you didn’t get into trouble. You could join and do different things. There was this dj school so I started at that and picked it up pretty quick. I’ve basically been dj’ing ever since. I practiced a lot, I bought the equipment and practed at home.
I never thought about careers, money or anything like that. I just wanted to dj because I love it.
It seems that some of the most successful people are driven by the love of music and nothing else. Can you let us know what we can expect from Morten Breum in the future?
I have a lot of exciting things coming up. I was just in the studio for the past two weeks in Denmark, working on new tracks and new collaborations. I don’t want to release who it’s with yet, because there’s no need to hype it up. I can promise that they’ll be coming out soon.

Editor’s Note: The best dj’s are from Europe and it makes perfect sense now. Do you think we’ll ever see dj’ing offered in schools in the United States?
