This September thousands will flock to Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado for the third annual Rowdytown experience. Touting an impressive lineup including The Floozies, Trippy Turtle, and of course Big Gigantic, the event is set to blow the roof off the Rocks. If third time is the charm, then this promises to be the most explosive year thus far. As the date draws nearer WRR wants to draw your attention to the biggest name on the bill, world renowned sax and drum wielding combination known as Big Gigantic.
The boys of Big G are based out of Boulder, CO and channel the massive vibes of the mountain across the world through their tunes. First, our attention goes to the man holding the brass, Dominic Lalli. He touts a masters degree from The Manhattan School of Music which he earned before joining the Motet, a Colorado based jazz band. This is where he met the man behind the sticks, Jeremy Salken.
In their live performances Dom controls the mixer as well as laying down rhythm support and handfuls of remarkable solos on the sax, while Jeremy goes in providing the raw, live drums. We kinda followed that (Pretty Lights) coming up. The DJ/drummer format. It made most sense because i was/am tryin to blow solos and improvise and make the improvisation/melody move the music. That whole concept makes much more sense with a drummer for me than without.” Dom states, in reference to their performance setup.
The two formed Big G in 2008 and released their first studio album Fire It Up a year later. Since then they have added four albums to their discography all the while touring and making a mess of bodies on the dancefloor.
So what is it about Big Gigantic that gets the crowd riled up and throws them into a frenzy? The guys don’t let themselves be confined to a certain genre, but prefer to produce music that spans the spectrum of electronic music. Take for example one of their biggest remixes of Jay-Z “Can I Get A.” Dom recreates the melody with heavy basslines while seamlessly incorporating the iconic lyrics of Jay and the ever-present sax.
Next is one of my favorite jams, their “I Need A Dollar” remix. The electronic elements take a back seat on this track in order to turn our full attention to the soul in Aloe Blacc’s voice and gorgeous saxophone courtesy of Lalli.
Lastly, I turn your attention to “The Night is Young” another of my favorite tracks named after their latest album The Night is Young. Featuring the lovely falsetto of Jordan Kelley of Cherub and more than the daily recommended dose of sax, this song brings the kind of upbeat tempo and positive vibes that the guys always bring to their live shows.
The duo is on their touring grind this summer hitting up 16 shows before Rowdytown. They are a new addition to Mad Decent’s Block Party lineup while also hopping across the great Atlantic to treat their European fans to a little electro-funk.
Every time I’ve seen them they continue to innovate and bring their live set to another level, always managing to exceed my expectations. I can only imagine what the scene is going to be like at Red Rocks given all the sick aesthetics are planned.
Be sure to catch their set at Rowdytown III this September 26th and 27th. If you’re a die-hard electronic music fan who’s a bit strapped for cash, we have the perfect opportunity for you. WRR and Rowdytown will be running a giveaway well into August giving 1 lucky fan a chance to win a pair of 2 day passes + an autographed T-shirt from Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken of Big Gigantic.
