Festival Season is here and so is Miami Music Week / SXSW. Shit is in full swing regardless if you love big-room or tech. Here are some fresh releases that’ve come our way recently, all tied together by one common thread – chill.
Emma Bale – Fortune Cookie Feat. Milow (Gostan Remix)
Gostan put this acoustic song and Emma Bale’s sweet vocals in a totally different category with his remix. By adding a heavy thumping dance beat and manipulating high pitched female vocals to create dreamy sounds, Gostan creates a bridge where this singable tune has now become a danceable anthem.
Shurk – The Wanderer
Shurk is a rising producer from the UK who is honing in a signature EDM sound. The title track from his new EP is called “The Wanderer.” If you dig progressive builds and festival-ready drops Shurk is worth a listen.
Goldwash – Need To Hear
Premiered by the fine folks at NEST HQ, Goldwash’s latest record “Need To Hear” is bouncy and a breath of fresh air. Lately I can’t get enough of his existential funk sound and I know it’s going to go big eventually. Enjoy!
Phantoms – Cocaine
This is one of the coolest covers I’ve heard in a while. A cover of Eric Claptone’s drug-fueled rock anthem “Cocaine” turned dark, edgy, deep, and catchy thanks to Phantoms. It’s simplicity make this cover’s ability to completely entertain even more phenomenal. This one was a random find, but a beautiful gem.
Soy Sauce x lil aaron – BOUT TIME
With a standard snare and cymbal track looping in the back, it’s the rhythmic nature of the lyrics that makes this track stand out. Not to mention the synth sounds that echo sonic waves, this is definitely a track with chill intentions.
Isaac Vallens – Dreaming of You
‘Dreaming of You’ takes you on a slow ride from the tops of the vocal spectrums to the lows of it’s bass breakdown, with a bridge across its hip hop influenced moments near the end. This track has a little bit of everything you like, the vibe it puts together showcases these different aspects while keeping a solemn and wavy emotion throughout the whole track.
Kali Uchis – Ridin Round (Billy-On Remix)
This song takes the natural rhythm of Kali Uchis singing and syncs it up with the beat to creates a sort of vehicle that drives your mind through the song. Beyond that, the vocal manipulation used as well as Uchis natural vocal range are like twists and turns in what is overall a pretty fun ride. Since we are on the car topic, this song would actually be a great choice to add to your ‘Crusin Around’ playlist.
Jackson Whalan & Jules Jenssen – Home Again
With almost a Pretty Lights like vibe “Home Again”, encompasses a bit of glitch hop, funk, and chill all into one track, keyboard and bass rhythms leading the way. The experience is well described by the dialog written on the Soundcloud description “Jackson and Jules transmitted soulful phrases using the Moog Sub37, flipped some obscure vinyl into horns and one shots, and captured a live drum tone reminiscent of a smokey 70s Motown record.”
Owen Bones – Grapefruit (feat. Myrone)
Groups like Savoy and Bassnectar have praised and used the electric guitar in their music, one solo artist Owen Bones, in collaboration with Kevin Abstract & Mick Jenkins, embraces this rather unpopulated area within electronic music with vast originality. “Surrender” surprised me, I couldn’t see the rhythm and melody design going together with such strong guitar work and effects, but the fusion is on point. Other blogs are loving what is going on here, now another is added to the list.
Database – For President Feat. Tidal Caves (Drunky Daniels ‘New School’ Remix)
Here’s a bit of tech to top everything off “For President Feat. Tidal Caves (Drunky Daniels ‘New School’ Remix) has a gradual rise and fall of energy that is much more of an experimental twist than the original version of the track conveys. A smooth and gliding ending to this week’s Unwind The Mind.
